Treatment options
Explore nonsurgical options aimed at reducing pain and improving how you move. Dr. Coon recommends treatment around your diagnosis and goals, coordinating rehabilitation with your physical therapist when appropriate.
Platelet-rich plasma
Your own concentrated platelets, placed at a selected target with the aim of supporting repair and improving function.
Prolotherapy
Dextrose treatment for selected joints and attachments, aimed at improving support and comfort with movement.
Nerve hydrodissection
Ultrasound-guided fluid placement around an irritated nerve, aimed at easing symptoms and improving function.
Perineural and scar treatment
Care for painful superficial nerves and scar-related tissue that makes touch or movement uncomfortable.
How a treatment decision is made
No injection is decided in advance. Before recommending anything, Dr. Coon weighs:
- Your history and physical examination
- Ultrasound or other testing, when it adds diagnostic value that informs your treatment options
- Which structure will be targeted, and the specific outcome treating it is expected to produce
- What you have already tried, and how you responded
- Your overall health, your preferences, and your goals
- The strength of the evidence for this treatment in your condition
- The risks, the cost, and the real possibility that it may not help
Standard care stays on the table
The right plan is sometimes rehabilitation and activity modification, further testing, or a referral, including a surgical opinion when the findings call for it. Sometimes the best next step is a period of watchful waiting with a set date to reassess. Dr. Coon lays out the options against your findings and your goals so the decision is yours.
Evidence is not all the same strength
Evidence varies by treatment and diagnosis. Dr. Coon explains what is known, what remains uncertain and how closely the research applies to your situation.
Questions worth bringing to the decision
- What diagnosis are we treating, and how well does it explain my symptoms?
- What therapeutic options exist other than a procedure?
- What outcomes would show the treatment is working, and what level of improvement makes it worthwhile?
- What are the risks for me, and what is the full cost?
- If I do not improve, what would we reconsider before repeating it?
Start with the evaluation, not a procedure choice
You do not need to choose a treatment before your evaluation.
